Information
It is the oldest chapel in Cottbus. As the name already betrays it is the rest of a former Franciscan monastery from the 13. / 14. Century. This lets itself be seen above all in the Gothic inside vault of the church.
Here is the oldest testimony of the Cottbus municipal history: A memorial slab with the representation of the town founder Fredehelm of Cottbus and his wife Adelheid. The chest of the town founder shows the family arms, the crayfish. Its sword also types the ornamentation of a crayfish this, in today valid heraldic animal the town.
The richly ornamented pulpit besides this situated crucifix from the time at 1310 and also the powerful altar from the 18th century of wood from the time at 1720 is completely wooden. A baptismal font is in front of the altar from the 15th century. It is also ornamented richly although it is complete made of stone.
The monastery church is called also "wendish curch". They used to keep services in Wendish language here regularly since the sorbish peoples and wendish peoples were resident in the Cottbus surroundings. The Wendish service is held only once a year today; at the first Christmas Day.
